The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. First, aim for about 1,000 mg of calcium a day – think dairy, fortified plant milks, leafy greens, or a supplement if you need it. Pair calcium with vitamin D (600‑800 IU daily) so your body actually absorbs the mineral.

Second, move your body in ways that push against gravity. Walking briskly, climbing stairs, or light weight training all tell bone cells to stay strong. You don’t have to lift heavy weights; even body‑weight squats or resistance bands work.

Third, check your lifestyle habits. Cutting back on cigarettes and limiting alcohol to a drink or two per week can slow bone loss. If you take medication that affects bones, talk to your doctor about possible alternatives or protective steps.

Finally, get a bone density test if you’re over 50 or have risk factors like family history. Knowing where you stand lets you and your doctor plan the right treatment – whether it’s medication, supplements, or a tailored exercise program.
